Another Hokies wide receiver is departing Blacksburg this season, this time via the transfer site.
The Virginia Tech football team has been incredibly busy over the previous seven days, with coaching changes, knowing their bowl destination, and, of course, the transfer portal. Let’s not forget that some players skipped the bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Ah, the transfer portal, where we’ll start this edition of Virginia Tech Football News.
The Hokies have had a lot of depth at the wide receiver position in recent seasons. When Ali Jennings, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Jaylin Lane announced their return, the depth chart remained deep. It made it difficult for some of the younger players to get on the field, but with all four gone next season, some of the younger players, with one exception, will have more opportunities.
On Sunday, former four-star receiver Chance Fitzgerald stated on his X account that he is entering the transfer portal. A highly ranked prospect, he was expecting a busy spring season and camp next summer to win playing time, but he’ll do so at another school.
Wide receiver in portal plans to visit Virginia Tech
Fitzgerald has entered the portal, and the top wide outs have left Blacksburg, thus the Hokies are looking for another receiver, among other things. A receiver who recently visited SMU is contemplating a trip to Virginia Tech.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Javonnie Gibson, who was named First Team All-SWAC this season, plans to visit Virginia Tech along with Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, and Mississippi State. This season, he has 70 catches for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns with the Golden Lions. With Kyron Drones and Pop Watson returning, Brent Pry and his staff will need to recruit some important receivers.
