After more than two years away from coaching, former Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin is returning to the sidelines. According to ESPN’s Chris Low, Harsin is set to join Cal as their offensive coordinator. Interestingly, Cal defeated Auburn earlier this season on the Tigers’ home turf.
“Former Boise State and Auburn coach Bryan Harsin is set to become Cal’s OC, sources tell (Adam Rittenberg) and me,” Low shared on social media. “Harsin and Cal coach Justin Wilcox previously worked together as coordinators on Chris Petersen’s staff at Boise State.”
Cal had already announced its intent to make changes at the offensive coordinator position earlier this season, and Harsin emerged as a strong candidate earlier this week to replace Mike Bloesch, who held the role for the past two seasons. This move reunites Harsin with Justin Wilcox, Cal’s head coach, who served as Boise State’s defensive coordinator from 2006 to 2009 while Harsin was the offensive coordinator.
Before his time at Auburn, Harsin compiled an impressive 69-19 record as Boise State’s head coach. However, his tenure at Auburn, which began in 2020 as Gus Malzahn’s successor, was fraught with challenges. He faced difficulties in recruiting, struggled on the field, and reportedly had strained relationships with the Auburn community. His time with the Tigers ended in 2022 amid controversy and unsubstantiated rumors.
Since leaving Auburn, Harsin has remained active on social media, often making critical remarks about his former employer. After the 2024 Iron Bowl, he posted a photo wearing an Alabama-themed shirt with the caption “Cheers to the winners!” in a not-so-subtle jab at Auburn.
Harsin’s new role at Cal not only brings him back to coaching but also connects him with a program that bested his former team this season. Perhaps this opportunity will allow him to focus on the field rather than his online commentary.
