The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly considering significant roster changes this offseason. They might trade All-Stars Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos, but additional shakeups could follow. Two key relievers, Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez, are entering free agency, with Estévez projected to command a three-year, $42 million deal, according to Spotrac.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline speculated that the Phillies might part ways with Estévez, a move they could ultimately welcome. “While Estévez wasn’t solely responsible for the Phillies’ postseason struggles, he faltered in a critical high-leverage situation that contributed to the team’s 3-1 NLDS loss to the New York Mets,” Kline wrote. Despite his postseason issues, Estévez is expected to find success as a closer elsewhere in 2025.
Letting Carlos Estévez leave in free agency might carry some risk, but given his projected $42 million contract, it seems like a practical decision. That money could be better allocated to other areas, such as a starting pitcher, an infielder, or another bullpen arm. Investing heavily in a closer may not be the most strategic move for Philadelphia, especially if they can secure a veteran like Blake Treinen or Kirby Yates on a shorter, more cost-effective deal.
