The New York Yankees are aiming to re-sign Juan Soto, but recent projections suggest the star outfielder might join a rival team instead.
Multiple teams have already met with Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, and they’re expected to begin receiving offers this week. A decision on Soto’s destination for the 2025 season and beyond is likely to follow soon.
MLB analyst Cale Aheran from FOX43 predicts that the New York Mets will sign Soto to a massive 14-year, $700 million contract.
“Juan Soto: 14 years, $700M – New York Mets.
‘The crown jewel of this year’s free-agent class is the 26-year-old Soto, who is seeking what will likely be the final contract of his MLB career and a record-setting deal,’ wrote Aheran.
‘The aim seems to be surpassing Shohei Ohtani’s deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers in terms of present-day value, and I predict the Mets will step up to secure a future Hall-of-Famer. Soto could finish his career at Citi Field alongside star shortstop Francisco Lindor.’
Soto leaving the Yankees for the Mets wouldn’t be shocking. However, what would come as a surprise is if he secures the $700 million deal, as many believe he is unlikely to reach that figure.
However, if a bidding war breaks out between the Yankees and the Mets, it’s possible Soto could reach the $700 million mark.
In 2024, Soto delivered an impressive performance for the Yankees, hitting .288 with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs.
Yankees Focused on Re-Signing Soto
The New York Yankees are determined to re-sign Juan Soto, who played a pivotal role on their 2024 roster.
The Yankees acquired Soto in a trade with the San Diego Padres, and owner Hal Steinbrenner emphasized the importance of keeping the star outfielder in the Bronx.
“Our fans loved having him in New York,” Steinbrenner said. “He was a major factor in our run to the World Series. I’m aware of the expectations. Re-signing him has been a priority—we wouldn’t have traveled to the West Coast if it weren’t.”
Despite this focus, Steinbrenner remains uncertain about the chances of retaining Soto. “No idea,” he admitted. “We’ll be in the mix. I’ll leave it at that.”
Soto excelled in the 2024 playoffs, batting .327 with 4 home runs and 9 RBIs.
Mets Plan to Outbid Everyone For Soto
Mets owner Steve Cohen appears determined to do whatever it takes to sign Juan Soto.
According to MLB insider Michael Kay of the YES Network, Cohen has informed Scott Boras that he’s willing to add $50 million to the highest offer Soto receives.
“I’ve heard from someone in baseball today that Cohen is prepared to go $50 million over any other bid,” Kay said. “It seems the Mets are eager to land this guy.”
The Mets recently met with Soto, and the meeting reportedly went well. Insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post shared that the Mets are “hopeful” — and perhaps even optimistic — about their chances of landing the biggest name in this year’s free-agent market.
Soto, a four-time MLB All-Star, remains one of the most sought-after players in baseball.
