BREAKING: Yankees Confirms Top Signing Of Big Playoff Enemy

The New York Yankees might be embracing the saying, “If you can’t beat ’em, sign ’em.”

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers free-agent pitcher Walker Buehler reportedly have “some mutual interest.” Morosi adds that the Yankees are aiming to strengthen their rotation this offseason.

Buehler, a 30-year-old two-time MLB All-Star, was a key obstacle for the Yankees in the recent postseason. He pitched five scoreless innings in Game 3 of the World Series to secure a win for the Dodgers and returned in Game 5 to close out the ninth inning, officially eliminating the Yankees from championship contention.

Although Buehler carries concerns due to his injury history, including two Tommy John surgeries, and a rough 2024 regular season with a 5.38 ERA, his proven playoff success could make him an appealing option for the Yankees on a performance-based deal. New York also seems like a more attractive destination compared to another team that has reportedly expressed interest in signing Buehler.

‘Bold’ Yankees Trade Proposal Lands Mason Miller For Two Top-Five Prospects

MLB free agency has started slowly, but the market could pick up once Juan Soto’s next move is decided. While much discussion has focused on the New York Yankees’ options if Soto leaves, what happens if he stays? Retaining Soto would pair him with Aaron Judge in the lineup again, but general manager Brian Cashman still faces significant challenges.

The Yankees need to address gaps in the infield and the pitching staff. Reliever Luke Weaver emerged as a reliable late-game option in 2024, posting a 7-3 record with a 2.89 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 103 strikeouts over 84 innings. However, Weaver will need support, as two-time All-Star Clay Holmes, now a free agent, is unlikely to return.

There are plenty of intriguing relievers available through free agency or trades that Cashman could target. One name not yet seriously linked to the Yankees is Mason Miller. While the Athletics aren’t actively planning to trade him this offseason, their stance could shift depending on future circumstances.
