The Hokies’ third-year coach provides an early look at what could happen in the transfer portal in the coming weeks.
There are two weeks left in the 2024 college football regular season. There is still much to be decided, both on and off the field. On the field, Virginia Tech is coming off its second bye week this weekend and will go to Duke at 5-5 in hopes of becoming bowl eligible.
If they don’t win No. 6 against the Blue Devils, the game against Virginia at Lane Stadium next Saturday will be the deciding factor. Following that, all eyes will turn off the field activity. Brent Pry and his staff may have a busy day.
Pry, who is in his third season in Blacksburg and has had what many consider to be a terrible season, joined Tech Talk Live before departing for Durham, N.C., and provided a potential look at what might happen with the transfer portal.
“We’ll have five to eight transfer spots based on attrition and potential players who leave the program,” said Pry. “That could grow, but right now, that looks like where we’ll be.”
That is not surprising at all. The questions that will arise today are who will enter the portal and exit, and who will not. You have to believe that Pry has a good understanding of who will or is considering entering and who won’t.
That is the current condition of both college football and college sports. We’re in the NIL era, and each school has a different budget. Unfortunately, Virginia Tech isn’t as huge as some would want when compared to other schools. If the Hokies are unable to become bowl-eligible, the number of players departing the program will likely increase. These final two games are much more than just achieving bowl eligibility.
