Virginia Tech Football Confirms 3 Disheartening Injury Setbacks Ahead of Duke

Brent Pry provided an injury report for a few important players ahead of this weekend’s game versus Duke.

This season was unusual for college football teams in terms of scheduling. With Thanksgiving falling so late this season, each club received two bye weeks. Virginia Tech received their first bye on Oct. 12, one week after traveling cross-country and defeating first-year ACC member Stanford 31-7 in front of a tiny crowd on Oct. 5.

This past weekend was the Hokies’ second bye week, which arrived at an unexpected time with only three weeks left in the regular season. At 5-5, you might argue that the bye week arrived at an ideal time for a variety of reasons.

The main rationale would be to give Virginia Tech’s injured players an extra week of rest with one win remaining to become bowl-eligible for the second consecutive season. On Tuesday, head coach Brent Pry met with the media and provided injury updates on some key players as they prepare for an ACC away game against Duke.

In recent weeks, the greatest questions were about the health of key Hokies. Quarterback Kyron Drones, as well as running backs Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas, have all suffered injuries in recent weeks. Pry said all three players are questionable for Saturday night’s game in Durham, North Carolina.

All three players did not practice over the bye week, which was unsurprising, but their health and participation levels should become clearer this week. Drones was injured prior to the Syracuse game on November 2, and Tuten suffered an ankle injury the previous week against Georgia Tech. Thomas was hurt between Syracuse and Clemson.

Drones and Tuten both played against Clemson, but neither was particularly good, leaving you wondering why it took so long for the coaching staff to switch to backups against the Tigers. UCLA transfer quarterback Collin Schlee played in the fourth quarter against Clemson, but he, too, was injured from the previous week’s game against the Orange.

The Hokies, who are still one win away from bowl eligibility, will need all hands on deck against Duke and Virginia the following weekend. As the game approaches, we should have a better notion of who will play and who will not.
