Just In: New York Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad gets called out by former NHLer Sean Avery for his work ethic

Former NHLer and New York Rangers player Sean Avery is not thrilled with Mika Zibanejad’s start to the 2024-25 season and has called him out for lethargy.
Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers is without a doubt one of the NHL’s best players, scoring consistently over the last six seasons. However, one former NHLer and Rangers player has publicly criticized the forward’s work ethic.

Mika Zibanejad had a strong performance in his final game with the New York Rangers, tallying a goal and two helpers against the Detroit Red Wings. However, those were his first goals and points of the season, as he was held scoreless in the team’s first two 2024-25 games. During the game against the Red Wings, Sean Avery, a former New York Ranger who was on the club when the NHL rule book was revised to include the “Avery Rule,” took to social media to point out what he saw Zibanejad doing wrong. Avery referred to him as “lazy,” accusing him of hiding to avoid doing the unpleasant labor.

Avery also questioned Mika Zibanejad’s well-known love of DJing during the NHL’s offseason.

“Ok, Mika. DJing in Ibiza all summer, here we go. Bear down. Bear down, Mika. The season’s started, Mika!”

Mika Zibanejad appears to have had the last laugh on Sean Avery with his three-point shooting performance. Having said that, Avery can improve a four-point night in his career despite not being known for his offensive abilities during his tenure in the NHL. It was against the Boston Bruins, when Avery scored one goal and three assists in the Rangers’ 7-0 victory.
