Breaking: Steelers Lose Another Top Prospect On Departure

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker prospect was signed off their practice squad by the Carolina Panthers, as reported by KPRC2 NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

He joined the Steelers as an undrafted rookie from Michigan State, participated in their entire summer program. He was only added to the practice squad a few weeks ago.

At 23, he brought versatility and potential. According to Steelers Depot writer Ross McCorkle, he “primarily” played inside linebacker during the preseason but also had some reps at outside linebacker and on special teams.

His best performance came in the first preseason game, where Pro Football Focus ranked him among the top 10 undrafted free agents, scoring him 90.0 out of 100. He ended the preseason with 3 defensive stops, 7 solo tackles, and 4 tackle assists, though he also logged 4 missed tackles and allowed 1 reception for 9 yards.

Overall, Windmon had a solid preseason, especially in coverage. While he initially missed out on a spot, he impressed enough to stay on the radar of general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin.

However, his return to Pittsburgh was short-lived, leaving the Steelers down a player on their 16-man practice squad.

Steelers Could Replace Jacoby Windmon With Recently Cut LB Ade Ogundeji

A few days after adding outside linebacker Adetokunbo “Ade” Ogundeji to their 53-man roster for Week 6, the Steelers released him on October 14.

Steelers beat reporter Mark Kaboly quickly suggested that Ogundeji would “likely” return on a practice squad deal following his release. Windmon’s departure from the practice squad also conveniently opens up a linebacker spot that Ogundeji could fill.

Ahead of Week 6, Ogundeji spoke about his mindset, telling reporters, “Always,” when asked how often he thinks about his next NFL opportunity. Reflecting on his time away from the field, he said, “There’s a different perspective you have when you’re watching others play. Last year gave me the chance to really understand that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

He added, “You don’t get this opportunity often, so whenever I’m out there, I’m going to give it my all and do my best to help the team win.”

Ogundeji received a 63.8 grade from Pro Football Focus for his 16 defensive snaps against the Las Vegas Raiders, where he mainly contributed as a pass rusher, recording 2 quarterback hurries but no tackles. He wasn’t involved in special teams.

As of October 15, the Steelers haven’t announced any additional roster moves.
