The New York Yankees opted not to extend a qualifying offer to top star, leading many to believe his time with the team was over. He failed to meet expectations during his tenure, has entered free agency. However, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman of *The New York Post*, the Yankees haven’t completely closed the door on a potential reunion.
“The Yankees are allowing him to explore other opportunities but might revisit him later based on what he discovers,” Heyman reported.
He recently finished a one-year, $14.2 million contract with the Yankees, serving as their starting second baseman and contributing offensively.
The 27-year-old posted a .257 batting average with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs in 2024. Over his MLB career, he has compiled a .265 batting average, 138 home runs, and 441 RBIs.
Torres Open to Returning to the Yankees
Although the Yankees chose not to extend a qualifying offer, signaling a possible end to his time with the team, Gleyber Torres remains open to returning to the Bronx.
“I’ve been here since 2018. My family is here,” Torres shared. “I know everyone in the organization, but at the end of the day, it’s a business, and I can’t control that. Let’s see what happens in the next few months.”
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed a lukewarm stance on the possibility of re-signing Gleyber Torres during the GM meetings.
“I’m not going to break down what he’s good at or where he might fall short,” Cashman said. “He’ll obviously have discussions with many teams that have needs in that area, and that could include us—who knows? But we do appreciate his contributions during his time here.”
If the Yankees decide not to re-sign Gleyber Torres, they will likely target a second baseman in free agency, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding DJ LeMahieu’s future with the team.
What is Torres Expected to Get in Free Agency?
Gleyber Torres is expected to pursue a short-term deal in free agency to rebuild his value. According to *MLB Trade Rumors*, he is projected to sign a two-year, $36 million contract.
“Torres has been a prominent name for years,” the article notes. “Once a top prospect in the Cubs’ system, he joined the Yankees in the Aroldis Chapman trade. Debuting in 2018 at just 21 years old, Torres delivered an All-Star season, followed by a 38-homer campaign during the juiced-ball era in 2019, positioning him as one of the game’s most impactful middle infielders.
“However, he hasn’t sustained that elite level, though he remains a solid hitter. Torres surpassed 20 home runs in both 2022 and 2023. While the Yankees moved him off shortstop, he’s still one of the better offensive second basemen in the league. If he had delivered another 25-homer season in his contract year, he might have been in line for a four- or five-year deal.”
If Torres opts for a one- or two-year contract, he could re-enter free agency before turning 30, as *MLB Trade Rumors* predicts.
“A three-year deal isn’t out of the question, and a four-year contract remains a possibility,” the article continues. “Still, he enters the market after a platform season that wasn’t particularly standout. Torres might seek a one- or two-year deal with an opt-out to try again at age 29.”
