For the second consecutive week, an opposing player was carted off the field due to injury during a Clemson football game. Virginia Tech linebacker was injured during the Tigers’ 24-14 victory at Lane Stadium. Late in the fourth quarter, at approximately the six-minute mark, Williams appeared to suffer a leg injury while tackling on a Clemson rushing play. He was placed on a stretcher and transported by ambulance from the field. The game was delayed for around eight minutes as trainers attended to Williams. No immediate update on his condition was provided, but his coach anticipated a statement later that night.
Virginia Tech linebacker Gabe Williams was seen leaving the field in an air cast on his left knee after suffering an apparent leg injury during the fourth quarter of Clemson’s 24-14 win. The game was delayed for about eight minutes as trainers evaluated Williams before he was stretchered off and taken by ambulance. During the delay, both teams kneeled on their sidelines, and Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney went over to check on Williams and speak with Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry.
Pry expressed concern for Williams postgame, noting that the freshman linebacker had worked hard to earn his playing time. Williams, who was making his second appearance after playing against Syracuse the previous week, is listed as a hybrid safety/linebacker (STAR) on Virginia Tech’s roster. He had previously played high school football at St. Vincent Pallotti in Bowie, Maryland.
This marks the second consecutive week in which an opposing player was carted off the field after an injury during a Clemson game. Last week, Louisville safety Ben Perry was injured and transported to a hospital after trainers worked to stabilize his neck. He was later reported to be alert and talking, and all tests on Perry came back normal.
Clemson’s Swinney reflected on the nature of the sport, emphasizing the respect he has for all players and coaches, especially in situations like this. “These are scary situations,” Swinney said, adding that his thoughts were with Williams and that he hoped he would be okay.
The victory moved Clemson to 7-2, with a 6-1 ACC record, while Virginia Tech fell to 5-5 (3-3 ACC).
