The New York Yankees may need to explore multiple player options depending on Juan Soto’s free agency decision, as losing the star slugger would dramatically alter their lineup. Replacing Soto would be a formidable challenge; he’s already on track to become a Hall of Famer at just 26 years old.
However, the Yankees do have potential alternatives, and one name to watch is Willy Adames, a top hitter on the market. ESPN’s Buster Olney suggested that if Soto leaves, the Yankees should consider signing Adames, potentially shifting him to third or second base. “If Soto departs, Willy Adames might be an interesting target, with the Yankees possibly shifting him to third or second, but agents expect that the bidding for Adames is going to be nutty this winter,” Olney noted in his November 4 column.
Most contract projections for Juan Soto range from $500 million to $700 million, making him an exceptionally costly signing for any team, including the New York Yankees, who have the financial resources but could still be outbid.
If the Yankees find themselves unable to retain Soto, they could consider investing heavily in Willy Adames, though he too may spark a competitive bidding war, potentially commanding a $200 million deal. If the Yankees are prepared to offer $600 million to keep Soto, they may also be open to a sizable contract for Adames if Soto departs during the 2024 offseason.
Adames Could Be Looking at Nearly $200 Million in Offseason
In ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel’s latest predictions, Adames is estimated to land a seven-year, $189 million contract, reflecting his high value. McDaniel noted, “On the heels of a strong 2024 season in Milwaukee, Adames has floated to the top of this position player group with Alex Bregman just behind him. Adames is about a year and a half younger than Bregman and also offers more defensive value and in-game power.” McDaniel suggests a deal akin to Marcus Semien’s seven-year, $175 million contract, adjusted for inflation, could be expected for Adames.
As the first true everyday shortstop to hit free agency since the 2022-23 market featuring stars like Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Dansby Swanson, and Xander Bogaerts, Adames will draw significant interest. His versatility makes him attractive, whether staying at shortstop or shifting to third base for teams with an established shortstop.
Adames Willing to Change Positions
While Willy Adames offers more experience and proven production compared to current Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, it may not be enough to justify spending nearly $190 million when Volpe remains on a cost-effective deal and isn’t eligible for arbitration until 2026. This financial flexibility is valuable for New York, as it allows them to allocate resources strategically.
Fortunately for the Yankees, there is a potential positional fit. According to Will Sammon and Katie Woo of *The Athletic*, Adames is open to changing positions if it means joining a contending team. “Free agent Willy Adames wants to stay at shortstop but would be willing to play a different position if he gets a strong offer from a team in position to win,” they reported on November 5.
With Gleyber Torres potentially leaving in the upcoming offseason, the Yankees could consider shifting Adames to second base. His offensive production would be a key factor in such a move, enhancing the infield’s overall firepower and providing flexibility within their roster construction.
