The New York Yankees may be preparing to replace Anthony Rizzo with another multi-time Gold Glover.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees are one of several teams planning to “aggressively” pursue first baseman Christian Walker in free agency this winter. According to Nightengale, at least six teams are interested in Walker, including the Yankees, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, and the incumbent Arizona Diamondbacks.
Walker, 33, is a three-time Gold Glover who has been with Arizona since 2017, notably serving as the team’s starting first baseman during their 2023 World Series triumph. This previous season, the righty batter hit.251, with 26 home runs and 84 RBIs in 130 games (after back-to-back 30-plus homer seasons).
The Yankees, fresh off their own World Series win, suddenly have a need at first base after declining Rizzo’s $17 million club option for 2025. Though Walker’s combination of power and defense will make him a highly sought-after free agent, we have discovered that the Yankees may pursue an even more promising first base prospect.
