Injuries are piling up for the Kansas State football team in a key defensive position. Asa Newsom, a redshirt-freshman linebacker who has been in every game for the Wildcats this season, will miss the rest of the season due to an injury sustained during a 29-27 win against Kansas on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. “We lost him for the season, unfortunately, with an injury,” K-State football coach Chris Klieman said during his weekly news conference. “We’re down a little bit at linebacker.” K-State’s linebacker depth could now be an issue.
Kansas State senior linebacker Beau Palmer from Overland Park has been sidelined for the rest of the season due to injury. This setback, combined with the loss of linebacker Jake Newsom, leaves the Wildcats needing to find additional depth and production on defense. Both players served as key reserves, making their absence a challenge for K-State’s defensive rotation.
To compensate, top contributors like Austin Romaine, Austin Moore, and Desmond Purnell will need to carry even more of the load. Head coach Chris Klieman emphasized the importance of younger, less experienced players stepping up in these circumstances and hinted at potential adjustments in defensive schemes to support the linebacker position.
Newsom, who recorded four tackles and played up to 27 snaps in individual games this season, is no stranger to injury struggles. During his redshirt season, he missed the final nine games due to injury after showing early promise, making this another tough blow in his collegiate career.
