Philadelphia Phillies reliever has a range of potential destinations this offseason. The Phillies are interested in re-signing him, though Jim Bowden from The Athletic predicts he may not return. In 2024, he posted a 3-3 record with a 2.17 ERA, a 2.52 FIP, and an impressive 5.56 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 68 games, earning him an All-Star nod. Hoffman also notched 10 saves and 21 holds. CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson noted that he would be a good fit for most contending teams, though he didn’t specify which ones. Spotrac projects he could secure a 2-year, $12.362 million contract, with opportunities in either a setup or closer role.
Re-signing him would be crucial for the Phillies, as he has become one of the league’s top relievers over his two seasons with the team. The Phillies, however, missed the chance to extend him during the season. With Carlos Estévez also hitting free agency, Philadelphia may need to revamp their high-leverage bullpen, which Matt Gelb of The Athletic anticipates. Hoffman’s career-best marks with the Phillies in K/9, BB/9, opponent batting average, WHIP, ERA, and FIP illustrate his value, though he may have other options outside Philadelphia if he chooses to explore free agency.
Potential Landing Spots For If Leaving Philadelphia
Baltimore Orioles
Bowden has suggested the Orioles as a possible destination for Hoffman, aligning with Anderson’s idea of a contending team. The Orioles, frequently highlighted during the trade deadline for their interest in high-leverage bullpen arms, may continue pursuing such options, making a deal with Hoffman plausible. Although Felix Bautista is expected back in 2025, this doesn’t eliminate the possibility of Hoffman joining the team. If signed, Hoffman would also reconnect with his former Phillies teammate, Seranthony Domínguez.
New York Yankees
Bowden also listed the Yankees as a possible destination for Hoffman, especially given Clay Holmes’ free agency, which could leave a gap in the bullpen. Although the Yankees have exercised Luke Weaver’s option, Holmes’ departure would heighten the chances of Hoffman signing with them. With several relievers entering free agency, the Yankees stand out as a logical fit for Hoffman, particularly as a contending team with the resources to meet his likely high salary demands.
Other Destinations
Bowden also mentioned the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, and San Francisco Giants as teams potentially interested in Hoffman. Realistic destinations include the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, both of whom have multiple relievers entering free agency. Wherever Hoffman signs, he’s likely to secure the highest contract for a relief pitcher this offseason. Additionally, whether a team envisions Hoffman in a setup role rather than as a closer could play a part in determining his landing spot.
