Russell Martin praises ‘outstanding’ Southampton star after Preston draw

MANAGER Russell Martin praised Gavin Bazunu for his “outstanding” performance in Saints’ late 2-2 draw against Preston.

In the sixth of six extra minutes at Deepdale, Southampton’s goalkeeper battled for the header that flicked off Ched Evens on its way to score.

The 21-year-old, who was making his 50th appearance for the club, also made a superb first-half save to deny Will Keane from close range.

When asked about his goalkeeper’s performance by the Daily Echo, Martin admitted that Saints must do more to keep Bazunu safe from shots.

“All of their chances came from set pieces and the second phase because we had to defend too many.

“It’s a strength of theirs with the size and power in their team. Gavin was outstanding when called upon.

“Then he scored which was obviously amazing. He asked to go up so we gave him permission and told Wee Man (Ryan Fraser) to wait to take the corner.

“He’s a brilliant young man with a great mentality. He shouldn’t concede two goals tonight, we have to help him.

“Nobody showed enough for him in the 10 minutes on either side of halftime. He is growing all the time, he has the mentality and courage. Now he’s got a goal as well.”

Southampton were forced to make five changes to the team that beat Hull 2-1 late on Saturday.

James Bree was one of players who came into the side and was making his Championship debut this season.

The 25-year-old defender began at left back in place of Ryan Manning, who was suspended, and impressed his manager with his performance.

“I thought James Bree’s performance was excellent,” Martin continued. “I’m really proud of him.

“His only game was against Gillingham away.” Given his inexperience, I felt he was great. He’s had excellent training.

“Unfortunately for him, he’s playing in a position with one of the best players in the division.” Kyle Walker-Peters was once again fantastic tonight.

“Some people took advantage of their opportunity, and I believe some will be disappointed.” The replacements had a significant impact on the game.

“I am really proud of them for keeping going and I’m really grateful to the supporters for travelling tonight.”
