Breaking News: Red Wings Lands Blockbuster Deal For Another Highly Experienced player

The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to break their playoff drought, and a trade suggestion involves them landing a star forward.

The trade involves a straightforward one-for-one exchange, with Detroit set to acquire Karlsson in exchange for Compher.

Karlsson is entering the sixth year of his eight-year, $47.2 million contract signed with the Golden Knights in 2019. He would likely serve as a middle-six forward for Detroit, potentially boosting the team’s offensive capabilities. Last season, Karlsson played in 70 games for Vegas, tallying 30 goals and 30 assists for a total of 60 points.

In return, Vegas would receive Compher, who could step in as the Golden Knights’ third-line center. Compher is in the second year of his five-year, $25.5 million contract with Detroit. Last season, he posted 19 goals and 29 assists for a total of 48 points in 77 games and played a significant role on the Colorado Avalanche team that won the Stanley Cup in 2022.

Red Wings Coach Intrigued to See How Roster Takes Shape

On October 6, the Red Wings reduced their NHL roster to 28 players. They need to cut down to 23 by October 7. While finalizing these cuts can be challenging, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde believes it’s not a major concern, as he anticipates more than 23 players will contribute to the team this season.

“People often make a big deal out of making the team on Day 1, but I’ve never understood it since Grand Rapids is just two hours away,” Lalonde said. “By Christmas, we’ll likely have used 33 players. Maybe this perspective is a bit old school—back 20 or 25 years ago, making the team on Day 1 was crucial. But in reality, we’re probably going to have 15 forwards and 10 defensemen contributing to our roster throughout the season, so it’ll be interesting to see how things unfold in the coming days.”

A significant move by the Red Wings was waiving defenseman Justin Holl, who was signed to a three-year, $10.2 million contract on July 1, 2023.

Detroit will kick off its 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10, facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
