Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs had a promising start with the Houston Texans, but there are mounting concerns that his season would be cut short due to injuries.
Diggs was injured in Sunday’s 23-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, suffering a non-contact injury while running a route in the second half. Diggs was removed from the game and did not return.
On the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter claimed he sees some “troubling signs” concerning the All-Pro wide receiver, whose prognosis is yet unknown.
Worries Grow for Stefon Diggs
Schefter noted that there has been no clear update on Diggs’ injury as of Monday afternoon, and that the team’s relative silence could indicate trouble for the wide receiver.
“Everybody is hoping for the best with Stefon Diggs but I think there are some troubling signs here,” according to Schefter. “The fact that it was a non-contact injury, the fact that people have been non-responsive in terms of questions about his status.”
Schefter also stated that it is normal for teams to notify members of the media when players are injured and the condition is not serious, even before any formal statements are issued. The ESPN insider stated he hasn’t heard anything from the Texans, prompting concerns that Diggs has suffered a catastrophic injury.
Diggs’ injury might disrupt Houston’s schedule, which includes a short week before facing the New York Jets on Thursday night.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Diggs was not scheduled to play Thursday, and his long-term status is unknown. According to the team’s anticipated practice report, Diggs did not participate.
Rapoport stated that the team was still evaluating the injury. Rapoport, like Schefter, claimed he has not received any assurances from the club that Diggs will be fine.
“It doesn’t sound very good for Stefon Diggs,” Rapoport remarked.
Fresh Start for Stefon Diggs
Diggs was traded to Houston in the offseason as part of Buffalo’s reorganization, which included lowering the salary cap and parting ways with a number of experienced players. He had gotten off to a good start, with 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns.
Diggs was coming off a difficult season in Buffalo, when he began well but ended with a seven-game drought without a receiving touchdown. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier this month that the Eagles began to consider a future without Diggs as the squad prospered despite his reduced role in the closing stretch of the season.
Despite Diggs’ slump, the Bills won the remaining six games of the season, including a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, in which Diggs caught four passes for 48 yards.
According to Fowler, following the Cowboys’ triumph, the Bills realized they might no longer need Diggs as the cornerstone of their offense.
“For a while, it was, ‘No way we can play without this dude,'” the anonymous source told Fowler. “But I thought to myself, ‘Oh, maybe we can do this without him.'”
Following the Diggs trade, the Bills rebuilt their wide receiver corps, using their first-round pick on Keon Coleman, acquiring many veterans, and completing a mid-season deal for Pro Bowler Amari Cooper.
