LSU football’s chief has left the program after more than a decade of working with coach Brian Kelly at various institutions, signaling a dramatic shift in the structure of his off-field staff.
LSU chief communications officer Zach Greenwell informed The Advocate that Rex quit on the Tigers’ first open date. Greenwell stated that her last day of employment was October 2. He declined to elaborate on why she left.
Rex served as Kelly’s chief of staff for the past 12 years at Notre Dame, having previously worked with him at Cincinnati. She joined him at LSU after the 2021 season in the same job.
According to her bio on LSU’s website, Rex managed “all aspects of the program” and was the “primary point person for all matters related to Kelly.” She has also worked with the Kelly Cares Foundation, his non-profit organization. The foundation raises funds for breast cancer research.
Rex, a Cincinnati alumna, worked as a sports trainer at her alma institution from 2001 to 2008. She assisted with several sports, including football, before joining Kelly’s staff at Cincinnati. She’d been working with him since then.
Before Kelly’s first season at LSU, he stated that the Tigers’ off-field staff reported to Rex, however responsibilities have altered in recent years. Kelly stated that Rex understood what he wanted after spending so many years with him.
“We’ll go over things,” Kelly told me at the time, “and she’ll be able to articulate that to the particular person or persons, whether it’s in recruiting or player development or player enrichment or personnel operations.”
