Breaking: Top Player Confirms Official Decommitment from Florida Football Program

Four-star safety has recommitted to previous program after initially flipping to Florida. Demetres Samuel Jr. who plays for Palm Bay (Fla.) Heritage, had committed to Syracuse for the 2026 class before reclassifying to 2025 and joining Florida’s recruiting class in late July, following a successful visit to Gainesville. However, after visiting Syracuse this past weekend, he decided to return to his original commitment to the Orange. Samuel had first committed to Syracuse on March 30 as a 2026 prospect, before reclassifying and flipping to Florida on July 31.

Samuel’s last visit to Florida was for their season opener against Miami, and he had recently expressed interest in taking additional visits. His departure leaves Florida with no safeties committed for their 2025 class.

Florida’s 2025 commitment list now includes 13 verbal pledges, featuring standout prospects such as four-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III, four-star edge rusher Jalen Wiggins, and four-star cornerback Ben Hanks Jr., among others.

According to 247Sports, Samuel is a versatile defensive back with a high ceiling, especially as a split safety given his range and ball skills. His physical profile includes a 4.65-second 40-yard dash and a 4.4-second short shuttle, along with impressive length, which could lead to opportunities at cornerback. Though he’s viewed as a developmental player, Samuel has shown a willingness to compete and has the potential to thrive as he adjusts to college football.

The 247Sports Composite ranks Samuel as the No. 242 overall prospect and the No. 21 safety in the 2025 recruiting class.
