Breaking News: Padres confirm unwanted setback as All-Star suffers serious injury

Joe Musgrove was cruising through Game 2 against the Atlanta Braves when he was forced to leave the game abruptly due to an apparent injury.

Musgrove, the San Diego Padres’ right-hander, restricted Atlanta to one run on one hit in the first 3.2 innings of Thursday’s game. But alarming signals emerged during Matt Olson’s at-bat in the fourth inning.

Musgrove threw two unusually slow curveballs to Olson, clocking in at 75 and 74 mph. Padres catcher Kyle Higashioka then called time in the middle of Olson’s at-bat, citing an issue with Musgrove’s delivery.

The former All-Star Musgrove would then depart the game with a trainer, forcing Padres reliever Bryan Hoeing to finish Olson’s at-bat. According to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Musgrove left the game with an apparent elbow injury after only 44 pitches.

Musgrove is concerned about this, as he has already been on the disabled list twice this year due to elbow concerns (a bone bruise and bone spurs). As a result, Musgrove only made 19 starts, going 6-5 with a 3.88 ERA.

If the Padres win Game 2 against Atlanta, they will face their bitter rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the National League Division Series. If Musgrove is unable to participate in that series, San Diego will most likely have to resort to another oft-injured veteran who has lately returned from the injured list.
