Everton are apparently facing a 12-point deduction, which would significantly reduce their Premier League survival chances.
According to The Telegraph, the Premier League has suggested that Everton be punished in a’record-breaking’ manner for allegedly violating profit and profit and sustainability standards. If found guilty, the Toffees could face a maximum penalty of 12 points deducted.
Everton have narrowly avoided relegation in each of the last two Premier League seasons, and they are now three points above the drop zone with seven points from their first nine games. As things stand, a 12-point deduction would put them at the bottom of the table with -5 points.
Everton has suffered considerable losses in recent years, with the club’s most recent records reporting losses of £44.7 million for the fiscal year 2021-22. Losses were significantly lower than the previous year, when they stood at £120.9 million.
Profit and sustainability guidelines in the Premier League limit clubs’ losses to £105 million over three years, albeit these were modified during the Covid-19 pandemic. Everton has lost £371.8 million in the last three years.
The club has previously stated that the substantial loss is due to the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in the vast majority of Premier League games being played behind closed doors during the 2020-21 season. As a result, the club only made £0.2 million in gate money.
Everton has incurred a total loss of £170 million as a result of Covid, with £103 million coming during the 2020-21 season.
And if found guilty, the Premier League’s latest alleged proposal may land the Toffees in serious trouble.
