Major Update: Brent Pry Officially Lands Exceptional Replacement For Tyler Bowen

Heading into the 2024 season, expectations were high for the Virginia Tech football program, but things quickly unraveled. The Hokies needed a win over Virginia during Thanksgiving Weekend just to secure bowl eligibility.

Following the disappointing season, head coach Brent Pry made significant staff changes, firing three assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Chris Marve and offensive line coach Ron Crook. Pry then brought in Matt Moore from West Virginia to coach the offensive line and recently hired Sam Siefkes as the new defensive coordinator.

However, Pry faced another setback when offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen left the program to become the offensive line coach at Ohio State under Ryan Day. The move was surprising, as Bowen stepped down from a coordinator role to take a position coach job. Many Hokies fans weren’t disappointed by his departure after a frustrating three-year tenure in Blacksburg.

With spring practices just a month away, Pry is now scrambling to find a new offensive coordinator. Given that he enters the 2025 season on the hot seat, this hire will be critical to both the team’s success and his future with the program.

Brent Pry must get the next OC hire correct

When Brent Pry was hired at Virginia Tech, he placed his trust in two inexperienced coordinators to lead the offense and defense. That gamble ultimately backfired, as both coaches are no longer with the program, leaving Pry tasked with finding the right hires to stabilize his staff.

While the jury is still out on new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes, Pry now faces the critical challenge of hiring an offensive coordinator who can make an immediate impact. This time, experience is non-negotiable—Pry needs someone with a proven track record at the collegiate level, preferably within the FBS ranks. The Hokies can’t afford another learning curve, as the previous experiment with inexperienced coordinators didn’t yield positive results.

Tyler Bowen’s unexpected departure for an offensive line coaching position at Ohio State seemed to catch Pry off guard, leaving him scrambling at a pivotal time with spring practices approaching. Now, Pry must hit a home run with this hire. If he misses the mark again, he could very well be the next one shown the door in Blacksburg. It’s a high-stakes situation for Pry, and the pressure is on to get it right.
