Latest Update: Postseason Trade Cubs Lands Huge Deal With Another All-Star Player

Reports suggest that New York Mets top star could be joining the Chicago Cubs as soon as next season.

With the regular season now over, the Cubs are shifting their focus to the offseason, aiming to improve for the upcoming year. The team finished the season with an 83-79 record, placing third in their division. Unfortunately, they missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, falling short of expectations. First-year manager Craig Counsell couldn’t provide the extra “push” the team was hoping for. The Cubs’ last postseason appearance was in 2018 when they lost to the Colorado Rockies in the Wild Card round.

The Cubs are aiming for a big turnaround in the upcoming offseason, and recent reports from USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale suggest they might be in the mix for Pete Alonso if the Mets fail to re-sign him.

Nightengale wrote, “If All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso doesn’t return to the Mets, rival executives believe he will wind up in Seattle or with the Cubs.”

Will Pete Alonso actually leave the New York Mets?

Pete Alonso, 29, who has spent his entire career with the New York Mets, is expected to be one of the most highly sought-after free agents this offseason after not being traded at this year’s deadline. He ranks just behind stars like Juan Soto and Willy Adames as one of the top players set to hit the open market. Alonso’s future with the Mets will largely depend on whether or not they make the playoffs and how far they advance.

In a July 17, 2024 article in Newsweek by Noah Camras, Alonso expressed his desire to remain in New York, saying, “I love New York. I love the Mets. I love being in Queens. I’d love to stay. I don’t want to get traded. I love it, it’s home.”

Ultimately, the Mets’ postseason performance and their willingness to meet Alonso’s high market value will be the key factors in determining whether he stays or moves on.
