The Los Angeles Dodgers have called up outfielder in preparation for their regular season finale against the Colorado Rockies. To make room for him, the team announced that right-hander Justin Wrobleski has been optioned to the minors.
Outman was called up following Kevin Kiermaier’s dislocated finger sustained while sliding into second base during Saturday’s game. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that the trainers were able to reset Kiermaier’s finger, but he will be considered “day to day,” according to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.
Outman makes his return to the Dodgers for the first time since August 6. He started the season with the team but was sent back to the minors after struggling at the plate. Although he was recalled during the summer, he was optioned back to the minors in early August.
In 52 games with the Dodgers this season, Outman posted a .148/.253/.267 batting line, recording 20 hits, 12 runs, four home runs, and 11 RBIs. In contrast, he has performed significantly better in Triple-A, where he boasts a .279/.390/.543 line with 74 hits, 62 runs, 17 home runs, and 46 RBIs.
Meanwhile, Wrobleski returns to the minors after making two strong appearances for the Dodgers. In Saturday’s game, he pitched four innings, allowing two hits, two walks, and no earned runs while striking out four. However, he has faced challenges overall in the majors this season, with a record of 1-2, a 5.70 ERA, and 26 strikeouts.
The Dodgers’ main focus is to maintain their health leading up to the postseason. Having already secured the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the National League following the Philadelphia Phillies’ loss to the Washington Nationals on Saturday, the Dodgers have little to play for in their season finale.
In addition to Kiermaier, first baseman Freddie Freeman is sidelined due to an ankle injury, which has kept him out of the final series against the Rockies. However, Freeman is optimistic about being ready for the start of the National League Division Series, set to begin next Saturday, October 5.
