The Atlanta Falcons have officially parted ways with quarterback Kirk Cousins, bringing an early end to his tenure with the team. This decision follows his benching in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. after a string of disappointing performances.
Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed in March 2024 but struggled throughout the season. In 14 games, he completed 66.9% of his passes for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and a league-leading 16 interceptions. His struggles were highlighted by a stretch in which he managed just one touchdown against nine interceptions, contributing to a 1-4 skid for the team.
The Falcons’ selection of Penix with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, shortly after acquiring Cousins, raised eyebrows. Despite limited action early on, Penix impressed in his first start, leading Atlanta to a dominant win over the New York Giants.
By releasing Cousins before March 17, 2025, the Falcons avoid paying him a $10 million roster bonus, though they will still face a substantial $65 million dead cap hit for 2025. The move signals the franchise’s commitment to Penix as their quarterback moving forward.
As for Cousins, his NFL future remains uncertain. At 36 and coming off a rough season, his prospects as a starting quarterback are in doubt. Analysts, including Michael Strahan, have been critical of his recent play, questioning whether he will secure another starting role.
With Penix now at the helm, the Falcons look to reshape their roster and build for the future, hoping this transition will mark the beginning of a successful new era.
