The Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting rotation has been plagued by injuries all season, and while Tony Gonsolin’s return was always unlikely, the team has now made a definitive decision about his status.
According to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, Gonsolin will not be activated before the regular season ends. Plunkett also noted that Gonsolin is currently in Arizona, where he is set to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday and face live hitters on Friday.
This isn’t a surprise for Tony Gonsolin, who is nearly 12 months post-Tommy John surgery. While it’s now confirmed that he won’t return before the regular season ends, Bill Plunkett hasn’t ruled out a potential postseason comeback.
Gonsolin has been on a minor league rehab assignment, gradually increasing his workload. With the minor league season over, Gonsolin is continuing his rehab at the Dodgers’ Arizona complex, his best option to stay on track for a possible return during the playoffs.

Tony Gonsolin struggled in 2023 before suffering an elbow injury late in the season. Over 20 starts, the Dodgers right-hander posted an 8-5 record with a 4.98 ERA. However, Gonsolin has shown glimpses of ace potential. In 2022, he was named an All-Star and led MLB with a 16-1 record, paired with an impressive 2.14 ERA, showcasing his capability as a top-tier pitcher.
