The Newcastle United midfielder is closing in on a return after five months out
As he nears a long-awaited return from injury, Newcastle United player Joe Willock has released a touching statement.
Willock last played for the Magpies in May, when he suffered a hamstring injury against Brighton & Hove Albion. The midfielder was supposed to return in preseason but suffered an injury. A new Achilles issue then pushed back his return even further.
The 24-year-old returned to training last week, but Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace came too soon. Willock was photographed in full training on Tuesday ahead of tonight’s Champions League encounter against Borussia Dortmund, and the timing of his message suggests a possible return to the matchday squad.
“So happy to be back with the Team,” Willock said on social media. It’s been a difficult journey. I’d want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped me throughout this difficult time. Your words of encouragement and well wishes meant everything to me.”

When asked about Willock during his pre-match press conference, United head coach Eddie Howe stated that the player is “getting closer with each passing day.”
Howe stated on Friday, “I want him back.” He practiced with the group for the first time this week, but it’s probably too early to have him in the matchday squad, but he’s coming closer and he’s a major player for us.”
Willock appeared in 43 games across all competitions last season. If he is unable to play against Dortmund, the former Arsenal’s men could make their return against Wolverhampton on Saturday.
