The New York Yankees have lost another key bullpen arm as right-hander ,was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right pectoral strain. He left Thursday’s game against the Seattle Mariners with pec tightness, having already dealt with soreness prior to the game. In a corresponding move, the Yankees have recalled right-hander Clayton Beeter from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Cousins, in his debut season with the Yankees, has been a standout reliever, posting a 2.37 ERA over 38 innings with 53 strikeouts. His 1.053 WHIP is the second-lowest among Yankees relievers with at least 30 innings, trailing only Luke Weaver.
Beeter, the 25-year-old righty, will make his second MLB appearance this year. His only major league outing came on March 28, where he delivered a three-pitch inning against the Houston Astros. In 10 Triple-A appearances this season, including seven starts, Beeter has a 3-1 record with a 2.25 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 36 innings.
Cousins’ absence will force manager Aaron Boone to lean more on Clay Holmes for late-inning duties, as Cousins had been regularly used as a setup man for closer Luke Weaver. The Yankees hope Cousins can return for the postseason when his contributions will be crucial.
The team returns home for a crucial series against the Baltimore Orioles after wrapping up their west coast road trip. With Sunday’s win over the Oakland Athletics, the Yankees are just one win away from clinching the AL East title.
