Breaking News: New York Rangers Signs Replacement For Kaapo Kakko

The New York Rangers are in a prime position to contend for the Stanley Cup, and one trade proposal suggests the team could acquire a star defenseman and forward.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a fan crafted a trade where the Rangers would receive Jonas Brodin from the Minnesota Wild.

In the trade:

Rangers would acquire:
Jonas Brodin
Mats Zuccarello
2025 second-round pick

Wild would acquire:
Jonny Brodzinski
Kaapo Kakko
Ryan Lindgren
2025 first-round pick
2025 fifth-round pick (Minnesota’s)

This potential blockbuster would give New York top defenseman Brodin and bring back forward Zuccarello, in exchange for three players and two draft picks.

Brodin is in the fourth year of his seven-year, $42 million contract. The former 10th overall pick would immediately strengthen the Rangers’ defense, contributing both offensively and defensively. Last season, he posted 7 goals and 20 assists in 62 games.

Zuccarello, a former Ranger from 2010 to 2019, would return to New York after a season in Minnesota where he logged 12 goals and 51 assists over 69 games. He would likely play a middle-six forward role for the Rangers.

In return, the Rangers would send the Wild two draft picks, including a first-rounder, along with Kakko, Lindgren, and Brodzinski. Kakko, a former second-overall pick, has yet to meet expectations but could be a younger replacement for Zuccarello in Minnesota’s lineup. Lindgren, at 26, could take Brodin’s place on defense, offering a younger option for the Wild’s future. Last season, Lindgren recorded 3 goals and 14 assists in 76 games. Brodzinski would provide physicality and depth scoring as a potential third-line forward.

Rangers’ Stanley Cup Focus
After finishing last season with the best record in the NHL, the Rangers lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Florida Panthers. With general manager Chris Drury aiming for a Stanley Cup in 2024-25, head coach Peter Laviolette will lead the team into another competitive season.

Wild’s Quiet Offseason
The Wild missed the playoffs last season and were limited in offseason moves due to salary cap constraints from the buyouts of Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. They signed Yakov Trenin to a four-year deal and traded for Jakub Lauko from the Bruins, but otherwise, their summer has been uneventful.
