The Bruins officially launched their 2024-25 season with a press conference from general manager Don Sweeney on the first day of training camp at Warrior Ice Arena on Wednesday.
After discussing the contract negotiations with restricted free agent goaltender , Sweeney shifted focus to the roster, highlighting players vying for a spot on the team, including last year’s standout rookie, Matthew Poitras.
The 20-year-old forward had his first pro season cut short due to right shoulder surgery on February 7, sidelining him for the rest of the season and playoffs.
“He’s fully cleared and we’re excited to have him back,” Sweeney said, as reported by NESN. “He’ll be playing both center and wing during camp. Last year, he surprised us, and before his injury, he was on track to stay with the team.”
Sweeney added that this year offers different options, such as playing some games in Providence. Poitras aims to secure a spot on the Bruins and resume where he left off, though it might take some time to get back into rhythm, but Sweeney noted there’s plenty of camp ahead.

Along with team practices, the Bruins will play seven preseason games and hold the Black and Gold game in Providence, featuring the full training camp roster. Sweeney mentioned that the extensive playing time for Poitras, along with prospects Georgii Merkulov and Fabian Lysell, over the next three weeks will help determine if they’re ready for the NHL.
“There’s plenty of opportunity to see if they’re prepared for the demands of the NHL and to make the team,” Sweeney said.
Boston’s on-ice practices begin at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday at Warrior, with their first preseason game against the New York Rangers at TD Garden on Sunday at 5 p.m.
