BREAKING: The Nationals Welcomes Another Highly Experienced Star After Suffering Devastating Injury

The Washington Nationals may see the return of young infielder C.J. Abrams and veteran starting pitcher Trevor Williams from injuries this week.

As the Washington Nationals enter the final two weeks of the season, they are hopeful to have shortstop C.J. Abrams and starting pitcher Trevor Williams back from injuries soon.

Abrams has been sidelined for a few days due to a shoulder issue, while Williams has missed most of the season with a flexor muscle strain.

Jul 13, 2024; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Washington Nationals shortstop C.J. Abrams (5) hits a 2-run home run against the Milwaukee Brewers in the ninth inning at American Family Field.

According to MASN Sports, Abrams increased his baseball activity on Monday, working through what the team describes as an impingement in his non-throwing shoulder. He hasn’t been placed on the injured list but has missed the last four games. On Monday, the All-Star infielder participated in team drills and took swings in the batting tunnel but didn’t take part in batting practice. Manager Dave Martinez mentioned that although Abrams was available to come off the bench, he did not play, as they want to ensure he’s fully ready before returning to the lineup.

The Nationals are being cautious with Abrams, a key part of the team’s young core that they plan to build around for 2025 and beyond. This season, Abrams has posted a .239/.308/.427/.735 slash line with 20 home runs and 65 RBIs.

Williams, meanwhile, threw his most recent rehab outing on Sunday for Double-A Harrisburg, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. It’s expected to be his final rehab start as he rejoined the Nationals on their road trip this week. He’s set to throw a bullpen session, and if all goes well, he could be activated to face the Chicago Cubs later this week, per MASN.

The 32-year-old pitcher has been on the 60-day injured list with a right flexor muscle strain since September 1, after being placed on the 15-day IL on June 4, retroactive to June 1. Before his injury, Williams was Washington’s most consistent starter, boasting a 5-0 record with a 2.22 ERA across 11 starts, striking out 47 and walking 16 in 47.2 innings.

Even with the season winding down, the Nationals are eager to see Williams return, aiming to implement a six-man rotation to give their young pitchers extra rest as they close out the season.
