Newcastle United now has two Brazilian midfielders in Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, but they attempted to make it three at the start of the season.
The Magpies were widely connected with signing South American teenager Andrey Santos at one stage, and were apparently confident of a deal.
Santos, on the other hand, signed for Chelsea for £18 million.
The teenager made an impression at Chelsea this summer, but has since been loaned out to Nottingham Forest. Santos, on the other hand, is fighting for minutes at the City Ground, having appeared only once for Steve Cooper’s side so far.
Newcastle spent a lot of money on Sandro Tonali over the summer, but he could be on his way out.
That is because Tonali is being investigated for betting, and looks set to receive a ban.
This could force Newcastle to sign a successor, and Andrey Santos is still a player who is adored within the walls of St James’ Park.
Newcastle still has a soft spot for Andrey Santos.
Andrey Santos is still a player who Newcastle United is interested in, according to 90min.
The Magpies are said to be interested in the 19-year-old again in January. However, there are other roadblocks that make a deal very impossible.
First and foremost, he is already on loan at Forest. To have any hope of signing him at the start of 2024, that contract would have to be dissolved.
Second, any transaction would have to be long-term because we already have one player on loan from Chelsea in Lewis Hall and are unable to sign a second due to Premier League rules.
Nonetheless, why would Chelsea sell? They only recently purchased Santos and brought him in because of his potential.
It would be a major surprise if they decided to let him go after less than a year.
Chelsea teenager is a big fan of Bruno Guimaraes
It is a shame for Newcastle, as Santos did look like he would be a perfect signing for the Magpies.
He would have joined an already impressive Brazilian contingent, and Santos is certainly a fan of Newcastle’s main man in midfield.
Santos earlier described Bruno Guimaraes as “phenomenal,” and he congratulated the 25-year-old on his selection to Brazil’s World Cup team last year.
Even as recently as Saturday, he praised Bruno on Instagram following Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
While Santos is undoubtedly a huge talent and someone who Newcastle adores, there is no way he will be joining them anytime soon.
