Breaking News: Edmonton Elks Top Star Retires Joining coaching staff

Aaron Grymes, a fan favourite of the Edmonton Elks, announced his retirement from the Canadian Football League on Friday after signing a one-day contract with the team.

The defensive back spent three seasons with the Green and Gold (2013-15, 2017-18, and 2021-23) and was a member of the Grey Cup-winning squad in 2015.

Grymes, who last played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, is joining the Elks permanently as a defensive assistant and community ambassador.

“Edmonton represents opportunity to me,” Grymes said in a news release on Friday. “It’s the place that gave me the chance to achieve my childhood dream of supporting my family through football. Edmonton helped me reach the NFL and build a successful CFL career.”

“I’m thrilled about my new role as defensive assistant and community ambassador. It combines the two things I love most, and I hope to bring the same passion and success I had on the field into this new chapter.”

During his eight seasons in Edmonton, Grymes tallied 240 defensive tackles, 19 special teams tackles, and 12 interceptions in 79 games. He was named a CFL All-Star in 2015 before playing the 2016 season in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.
