According to a report from the Sunderland Echo, young defender Zak Johnson, who belongs to Sunderland, will continue his loan spell at Hartlepool United until January. Sunderland permitted his temporary departure in September, initially on a one-month arrangement.
The 19-year-old Johnson has left a positive impression during his time with Hartlepool in the National League, making five league appearances for the team.
The recent update from the Sunderland Echo suggests that he will stay with John Askey’s side until the New Year, after which his parent club will reevaluate his situation when the next transfer window opens.
Zak Johnson has been associated with Sunderland throughout his entire career so far, having progressed through the club’s youth academy and consistently represented various youth teams.
Despite having made two first-team appearances for Sunderland and being under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2026, he currently finds himself lower in the pecking order for Tony Mowbray’s senior squad. This is primarily due to the surplus of options available in his position, which prompted his loan move to Hartlepool last month.
Johnson’s temporary transfer to Hartlepool offers him the opportunity to gain regular playing time and advance his development.
While he has accumulated 36 appearances for Sunderland’s U21s in all competitions, competing in the fifth tier with Hartlepool is seen as a better option for his growth compared to continuing to play youth football.
Sunderland recently suffered a 2-1 defeat to Stoke City and is set to face Leicester City in an away match tomorrow night.
