The Ohio State football team are without one of its players due to a soft tissue injury, and he remains day-to-day.
Two starters were absent for the season opener against Akron. Starting linebacker Cody Simon missed the game and is listed as day-to-day. Sonny Styles took his place, while C.J. Hicks started in Styles’ previous position but shared snaps with other players.
Guard Donovan Jackson was the other starter missing from the lineup. Austin Siereveld filled in for him and performed better than anticipated, though Carson Hinzman, who also rotated in, was less effective than expected. Jackson is also day-to-day.
Jackson’s injury is particularly worrisome because the offensive line’s performance on Saturday fell short of expectations. As the top offensive lineman for the Buckeyes, his injury adds to concerns about the line’s effectiveness.
Reports indicate that Jackson is dealing with a hamstring injury, which is particularly concerning. Hamstring injuries often persist for weeks if not treated properly, and Ohio State can’t afford to lose him during critical games.
This injury also highlights a troubling trend in recent years. The Buckeyes have frequently experienced soft tissue injuries early in the season, as seen with Jackson Smith-Njigba, Emeka Egbuka, and now Jackson. The recurring nature of these injuries raises questions.
It’s apparent that adjustments may be needed in the strength and conditioning program to prevent such injuries from occurring at the start of the season. These injuries are often avoidable, and players shouldn’t be sidelined at the beginning of the year.
