Good news for South Carolina football: Highly-rated star now sidelined with serious injury

The South Carolina football defense will not have to face Kentucky Wildcats running back Chip Trayanum this weekend since he is still sidelined with a broken hand injury.

This weekend, the Gamecocks will play one of the important games on the 2024 South Carolina football calendar when they travel to Lexington to face the Kentucky Wildcats.

The game could be a pivotal point for whichever team wins. If neither USC nor UK start 2-0, they will face a difficult road to bowl eligibility. Carolina defeated Old Dominion last weekend, and Kentucky defeated Southern Miss, so both teams are 1-0 into the Saturday matchup at Commonwealth Stadium.

In close games, such as South Carolina-Kentucky, injuries can be a huge storyline.

During his weekly radio show on Monday night, UK head coach Mark Stoops stated that his team’s expected top running back, Ohio State Buckeyes transfer Chip Trayanum, will miss this weekend’s game against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Trayanum injured his hand during preseason camp in August, and it was expected that he would miss the Wildcats’ first game, as well as week two. Now it’s official.

During Trayanum’s absence for the season opener, Demie Sumo-Karngbaye led the ‘Cats in rushing attempts and yards (8 carries for 59 yards) and should be the team’s primary back again on Saturday. However, Jason Patterson should get some running back reps, and starting quarterback Brock Vandagriff and dynamic wide receiver Barion Brown could play a role in the ground game as well.

The Gamecocks are also battling with a few injuries on their roster, but South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is unlikely to disclose many precise details until the league-mandated injury report is released on Wednesday.

Even then, the report can be updated on Thursday, Friday, and 90 minutes before kickoff on Saturday, so it’s uncertain what fans will discover about the Gamecocks’ squad health until Saturday.
