Injury Update: Phillies Star confirms he won’t return soon

Alec Bohm missed his fourth consecutive game Tuesday night, as the Phillies began a fast two-game series in Toronto.

Bohm strained his left hand on an awkward swing in the first inning of last Thursday’s series opener against the Braves. He has not been placed on the disabled list, and manager Rob Thomson told reporters before Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays that he does not believe Bohm will need time on the IL.

It does not appear, however, that Bohm will return to Toronto.

“It’s getting better but it’s not getting better as quickly as we’d thought,” he said to the media. “We just want to make sure we knock this thing out because I’m always scared of foot injuries, hand injuries, and how they affect people’s swings, which leads to bad habits and loss of confidence.

“We will simply continue to monitor it on a daily basis. I believe it will most likely be in Miami. “It won’t be an IL.”

The Phillies will play in Toronto on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon, followed by four games in Miami from Thursday to Sunday. At this stage, they don’t want to put Bohm on the injured list because they “don’t want to lose two or three days on the back end,” Thomson said.

Bohm is batting.290/.343/.462 this season, including a major-league-leading 44 doubles. He has 13 home runs and leads the Phillies with 89 RBIs.

Nick Castellanos took over cleanup for the fourth consecutive game sans Bohm. Castellanos had three big games during last week’s homestand, including a three-run home run against Justin Verlander, a two-run homer late against the Braves in the series opener, and a walk-off single as part of a three-RBI night in the finale.
