JUST IN: Atlanta Braves Star suffers broken toe

Braves Franchise History:

– 1926: The Braves allow a National League record 12 runs in the fifth inning of a 17-3 loss to the Giants. Seventeen-year-old Mel Ott goes 3-for-3 at the plate and steals a base.
– 1927: Doc Gautreau sets a major league record by stealing home twice in a game against Brooklyn. This feat won’t be matched until Vic Power does it in 1958.
– 1956: The Braves draw a record 47,604 fans for a home night game, setting an attendance record during a doubleheader split against the Redlegs.
– 1957: Warren Spahn throws his 41st career shutout in an 8-0 victory over Chicago.
– 1966: Eighteen-year-old pitcher Charlie Vaughn earns his first and only major league win, defeating the Astros 12-2. Vaughn will make just one more major league appearance in relief in 1969.
– 1991: Jeff Blauser breaks a toe in a game against Montreal and will be sidelined for the next two weeks. The Braves call up Rico Rossy to fill his spot on the active roster.
– 1996: Marquis Grissom starts the game with a leadoff home run off Dave Burba, but it turns out to be Atlanta’s only hit in a 5-1 loss to the Reds.

MLB History:

-1906: Ty Cobb returns to the Detroit lineup after a six-week absence, recording a single and a steal but misplaying a fly ball into a home run, leading to a 1-0 loss for the Tigers.
-1921: Babe Ruth hits his 50th home run of the season, helping the Yankees to a 9-3 victory over the Senators.
-1928: Ty Cobb logs the final hit of his career, a pinch-hit double for the A’s against Bump Hadley.

-1939 – As the 6:30 pm Sunday curfew looms, the Yankees start delaying play to avoid a loss in Boston. Fenway Park fans become furious, throwing cushions and debris onto the field. Umpire Cal Hubbard awards the game to the Yankees, but American League president Will Harridge overrules this decision, declaring the game a 5-5 tie and fining the Yankees.

-1954 – Ted Williams hits his 362nd home run, moving him into fifth place on the all-time home run list.

-1965 – The Los Angeles Angels change their name to the California Angels in preparation for their move to Anaheim.

-1984 – Bruce Sutter sets a new National League record for saves in a season with his 38th as the Cardinals defeat the Mets 7-3.

-1992 – Baseball owners vote 18-9 to call for the resignation of commissioner Fay Vincent.
