The No. 19 Miami Hurricanes began their 2024 season on a high note, defeating the rival Florida Gators in Week 1. Even better, the 41-17 triumph occurred at The Swamp in front of tens of thousands of Florida fans, including a sizable number of Gator prospects.
It’s no wonder that Miami is celebrating its big triumph. Quarterback Cam Ward certainly did. After throwing for 385 yards and three touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes, Ward celebrated by imitating the amount of noise Florida fans produced throughout the overwhelming victory.
“Some advice to the fans,” Ward told reporters at his postgame press conference. “If you’re going to be noisy, do it while we’re huddling. We cannot simply be loud once we have broken the huddle. By then, there is no purpose. We can hear the play. We’ve already communicated. But it was a pleasant environment to play in.”
These are words that Gator fans are unlikely to forget. The spoils, however, go to the victor, as does the privilege of talking trash. Ward earned that right by his superb play.
Ward, a two-time transfer who played at Washington State last season, is critical to Miami’s postseason prospects this year. It is safe to say he is off to a good start.
