The player was cut from the Arizona Cardinals’ 53-man roster just before the start of the 2024 NFL season.
Michael Carter, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, never quite replicated the success he had during his senior year at UNC, where he and Javonte Williams led the Tar Heels to their first-ever Orange Bowl appearance. The Jets reduced Carter’s role significantly in his third year, giving him only eight carries over nine games before releasing him on November 14, 2023. He was picked up by the Cardinals the following day.
Carter’s situation with the Cardinals didn’t improve. Behind James Conner, who has been a key player for the team both in rushing and receiving, Carter saw limited action, playing in only six games with just 22 carries and no touchdowns.

The situation worsened when the Cardinals selected Trey Benson from Florida State in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Carter did not play in the team’s final preseason game, and Head Coach Jonathan Gannon’s comments about his absence took on a more serious tone with the news of Carter’s release.
Despite this setback, Carter should be able to find a new team, possibly starting on a practice squad. The NFL’s demand for running backs means there’s always a need for depth at the position, so keep an eye out for updates on where Carter lands next.
