Roy Hodgson names the Newcastle United star he ‘feels sorry’ for ahead of Crystal Palace game

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has offered his condolences to Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Roy Hodgson has expressed sympathy for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who faces a lengthy suspension from the game.

Tonali is being investigated for illegal betting activity by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, disclosed earlier this week that the player is suffering from a gambling addiction.

According to reports in Italy, Tonali, who came from AC Milan in the summer for £52 million, might face a 12-month suspension if found guilty. However, until the investigation is completed, the 23-year-old is eligible to play for the Magpies and might face Palace at St James’ Park on Saturday.

When asked about the Tonali scenario, Hodgson stated, “I have no reaction at all.” It has absolutely nothing to do with me. I’m sorry for him, and I’m sorry for Newcastle. It must be a terrible pill to swallow to sign someone you trust in just to discover, after spending a lot of money, that you may not be able to employ him for a long time.

“That must be a difficult situation for Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth, but it has no bearing on us.” Good luck to Newcastle if they want to play him. If they prefer not to, that is their choice.”

Eddie Howe, the Magpies’ head coach, stated at Friday’s pre-match press conference that Tonali’s welfare is his primary concern.

“It’s absolutely critical for me,” Howe added. “The most crucial aspect of this entire situation is Sandro and his well-being. It’s easy for people to forget how young he is and how much his life has changed since moving from Italy to England.

That’s difficult enough to deal with, and now he has this dilemma, so we as a football club immediately threw our arms around him and protected him, trying to give him the love and support he needs to find solutions to the problems he’s had.

“That’s what we’re attempting to do with a lot of conversations and communication with him and his family, because it’s not just Sandro who will be so important to him, but also the people around him.”

“We’ve put in a lot of effort, and I have to say, he’s handled himself admirably.” He was clearly emotional, yet he behaved himself with dignity and respect.”
