The Dallas Cowboys Have Been Negotiating Contract Extensions for CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, and Micah Parsons
The ongoing contract extension negotiations with the Cowboys’ three best players have been one of the offseason’s key topics, at least among the media and fans. Quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and linebacker Micah Parsons are all in their final year of contracts and expect to be among the highest-paid players at their professions.
Prescott and Parsons have attended team events and training camp, but Lamb has not. Instead, the All-Pro wide receiver has refused to report to the team until he signs a new contract.
Lamb is presently set to play out his fifth-year option, which would pay him $17.9 million. However, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones recently stated that Lamb has informed the team that he wishes to be the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
And his rejection of Dallas’ most recent contract offer indicates that he is not exaggerating his demands.
Dallas Cowboys All-Pro CeeDee Lamb Turned Down a Contract that Would Have Made Him the 2nd-Highest Paid Wide Receiver in the NFL
Justin Jefferson, wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings, is now the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Earlier this offseason, he inked a four-year, $140 million contract extension that will pay him $35 million annually on average.
This is the new norm for NFL wide receivers, and Lamb wants the Cowboys to uphold it. According to NFL analyst Mike Garafolo, the Cowboys All-Pro recently declined an offer from Dallas that would have made him the NFL’s second-highest-paid wide receiver. “My understanding is it’s around $33 million, and for Lamb, that’s still not good enough,” Garafolo reported.
“The top of the market for Justin Jefferson is $35 million, so he wants that to come up. And the structure, according to individuals familiar with Lamb’s thinking, needs to be worked on as well — cash flow assurances and how they will be structured in the first half of the agreement.”
Lamb appears to want to at least match Jefferson’s average annual compensation of $35 million. He also wants the contract to be frontloaded so that Dallas cannot release him after a few years to save money.
The two parties are not close to reaching an agreement, but there is no doubt they will.
For now, the waiting game continues.
