Callum Wilson might make his first start for Newcastle United in nearly a month this weekend against Crystal Palace.
Wilson has been out with a hamstring injury that has kept him out of Newcastle’s Premier League triumphs over Burnley, Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Despite Wilson coming off the bench against West Ham United, Magpies manager Eddie Howe said he only brought him on ‘in an emergency’ because Alexander Isak picked up a knock.
Isak’s injury forced him to withdraw from Sweden’s international duties, and he is a huge doubt for Saturday’s meeting at St James’ Park (3pm kick-off), with the 24-year-old unable to resume full training.
As a result, Wilson is likely to enter the game. When pressed about his fitness on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, the Newcastle No. 9 remained tight-lipped.
“I’m not answering that question,” he stated in response. “I don’t want Palace knowing any details about me!”
“I went out to Dubai, had a few days off from the club and no international break so I decided to go and get some warm-weather training in,” Wilson said of his international break.
“I’d just got back fit before we played against [West Ham] but I hadn’t actually trained so, for me, it was a really important period of time to get some training work into me and there’s no better place than in some heat you know!”
Wilson has now scored four goals for Newcastle this season despite only making two starts.
