The Chicago Cubs have been among the most active teams this offseason, reshaping their roster with the additions of Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly. With the NL Central wide open, the Cubs are positioning themselves as strong contenders—but they may not be finished yet. They remain heavily involved in the pursuit of Alex Bregman, and signing the two-time All-Star could solidify them as division favorites.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted Bregman would join an already formidable Cubs lineup alongside Ian Happ, Kyle Tucker, and Seiya Suzuki. “The Cubs are still in the mix for Alex Bregman as his free agency extends into February. While signing him would block top prospect Matt Shaw, it would also prevent the team from relying on an unproven player in the everyday lineup to start the season,” Reuter noted.
Adding Bregman would bring much-needed stability to third base, a position of uncertainty for Chicago. With Shaw not guaranteed to be MLB-ready by Opening Day, the Cubs would otherwise have to rely on Jon Berti or Rule 5 pick Gage Workman, which could leave them vulnerable offensively. Bregman’s presence would provide immediate impact, strengthening the lineup and eliminating a key question mark.
Beyond his on-field contributions, Bregman already has a connection to the Cubs through former Astros teammate Kyle Tucker, who could help recruit him to Wrigley Field. Reports indicate that Bregman is seeking a short-term, high-salary contract with opt-outs, a structure that aligns with how teams are handling free agents this late in the offseason.
With a strong pitching staff, an improved bullpen, and an already competitive offense, the Cubs are on the brink of becoming a powerhouse in the NL Central. If they land Bregman, they wouldn’t just be division favorites—they’d be serious contenders in 2025.
