The New York Yankees have activated catcher Jose Trevino from the 10-day Injured List after a brief rehab assignment following a quad injury.
The Yankees just finished a three-game series in Chicago against the White Sox and will travel to Detroit on Friday to begin a series against the Tigers. Trevino will be allowed to return to manager Aaron Boone’s lineup in that game. While Trevino is back on the active roster, the Yankees optioned backup catcher Carlos Narvaez back to Triple A Scranton-Wilkes Barre.
Trevino was splitting time at catcher with youngster Austin Wells prior to the injury, but he is expected to see less playing time when he returns because Wells has been hitting so effectively in recent weeks.
Trevino was known for slicing before joining the IL.244/.303/.411 with 8 home runs, 27 RBI, and 22 runs scored.
Wells has frequently found himself in a cleanup role for the Yankees. Wells, 24, is slicing.This season, he’s batting 257/.347/.426 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs. He is in his second season with the Yankees, having played sparingly as a rookie.
In 2023, he hit.229/.257/.486, with four home runs and 13 RBIs. He has certainly been more at ease in the Major Leagues this year, and Boone has demonstrated that he confidence in him as a hitter and behind the plate.
Wells was 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs in Wednesday’s 10-2 win over the White Sox.
Trevino has delivered at a higher level
While Trevino’s 2024 numbers are not particularly outstanding, he has previously been an All-Star. He was selected to the American League All-Star team for the 2022 season.
Trevino played 115 games with the Bronx Bombers that season, hitting.248/.283/.388 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI. Trevino has played more than 89 games in only one season of his career. He spent his first four seasons with the Texas Rangers before joining the Yankees in 2022.
The Yankees are first in the American League East and are in a close race with the Baltimore Orioles for the division lead. The Yankees have won 12 of their last 17 games following a lengthy midseason slowdown in which they relinquished the significant lead they had earned during a good start to the season.
The Yankees offense appears to be regaining its rhythm. They’ve scored eight or more runs in three of their last four wins. Outfielder Juan Soto blasted three home runs in a 4-1 win over the White Sox in the only game they did not reach that level.
