The Detroit Tigers have added another high prospect to their roster of call-ups before of their game against the New York Yankees.
The Detroit Free Press reported that Jung, the Tigers’ No. 5 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, would be promoted to the Detroit Tigers for Friday’s game against the New York Yankees.
That story came just a few hours after ESPN claimed that the Tigers would promote infielder Trey Sweeney from Triple-A. Sweeney came to Detroit in exchange for pitcher Jack Flaherty, who was sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jung is a homegrown prospect who was picked 12th overall by the Tigers in 2022. He is the younger brother of Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung, who made his MLB debut in 2022 and helped the Rangers win the World Series as a rookie the previous season.
After joining the Tigers in 2022, he was assigned to High-A West Michigan and batted. In 30 games, he batted 231 and had one home run and 13 RBI.
His stats improved in 2023 when he played for West Michigan and Double-A Erie. He combined to hit.265/.376/.502/.878 with 28 home runs and 82 RBI, putting him on the radar for a call-up this season.
Jung began the season at Triple-A Toledo and has spent the majority of his time with the Mud Hens, with the exception of a few rehab games with Lakeland following an injury. He’s sliced multiple times.258/.380/.461/.841, with 15 home runs and 63 RBI.
MLB reported that the Tigers intend to play Sweeney and Jung extensively in the final weeks of the season to see where they fit in the franchise’s future. Sweeney will most likely play shortstop, while Jung will play third, the same position as his older brother.
He was one of five Detroit players included in the MLB Pipeline Top 100, which was revealed earlier this week. The other four prospects were outfielder Max Clark, pitcher Jackson Jobe, infielder Kevin McGonigle, and Bryce Rainer. Jobe is in Double-A, and the others are below in the system.
Jung, like his older brother, attended MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Texas, before continuing on to Texas Tech.
As a redshirt freshman in 2021, he was named Big 12 Player of the Year after batting.337 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs. The next summer, he was invited to the Cape Cod Baseball League and had another stellar season at Texas Tech before being taken No. 12 overall by the Tigers.
