Newcastle United open talks with £150,000-a-week treble winner

Newcastle United is reportedly in discussions with Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, as per a report from TEAMtalk. Manchester City is willing to part ways with Phillips, who has fallen out of favor with the Premier League champions. Negotiations are underway between Newcastle United and the 27-year-old England international, but it’s uncertain whether they can persuade him to join their team.

During the summer transfer window, Newcastle United acquired Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, and the 23-year-old has quickly adapted to the Premier League, becoming a crucial player for the club. However, Tonali may face a lengthy suspension due to his involvement in an illegal betting scandal, which necessitates the recruitment of a quality defensive midfielder, with Kalvin Phillips being a prime target.

Since his £45 million move to Manchester City, Phillips has faced difficulties, making a fresh start an appealing prospect for him. Newcastle United hopes he can become a pivotal player for their team in the second half of the season.

It’s worth noting that Liverpool has also expressed interest in signing Kalvin Phillips.

The former Leeds United player is not displaying the same level of performance he exhibited with his previous club. Whether Manchester City will approve his departure in January is still uncertain. Phillips is currently earning £150,000 per week at Manchester City, and the Premier League champions may be keen to offload his wages, especially after his prolonged underperformance. A switch to Newcastle could offer Phillips an opportunity to rediscover his top form.

Phillips was widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders during his time at Leeds United. His addition to the Newcastle midfield would provide the team with the much-needed quality and depth, especially as they compete in the UEFA Champions League.

In the event of a lengthy ban for Tonali, a quality defensive midfielder is imperative to fill the void. Phillips is familiar with the Premier League, which could lead to an immediate impact at St. James’ Park. The outcome will be of great interest as the two clubs attempt to finalize a transfer agreement in the coming months.
