Another running back for the Texas Longhorns has had his season abruptly ended before it truly began.
True freshman Christian Clark sustained a non-contact ankle injury during Monday’s practice, which was later diagnosed as a torn Achilles tendon.
Clark is now set to undergo season-ending surgery on his ankle, making him the second running back in just six days to be removed from the Horns’ depth chart.
Just a week prior, the team announced that anticipated RB1 CJ Baxter would be sidelined for the rest of the season. Baxter suffered injuries to both his PCL and LCL in practice and will also require season-ending surgery, similar to Clark.
With both of their top running backs sidelined, Texas’ depth at the position is quickly shrinking. So, who is left?
Jaydon Blue is anticipated to step in as the starting running back for the Longhorns this fall, replacing Baxter.
The remaining support in the backfield includes just two other players: sophomore Quintrevion Wisner and freshman Jerrick Gibson.
“Injuries are part of the game we play,” said Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. “I believe we have players who are more than capable of stepping up and filling those roles.”
Although Ewers is not particularly known for his rushing ability, he expressed willingness to take on additional running duties if needed.
Texas has boasted some of the top running backs in the country over the past decade, including Bijan Robinson, who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons.
Clearly, recruiting is not the issue.
The question now is whether there is a problem with the strength and conditioning program, especially given the multiple season-ending injuries during practice.
Only time will reveal which players will be ready for kickoff and how the team will address the gaps left by these injuries.
