Monday night was a very awful night for the New York Yankees, and not just because they were blown out by the MLB’s weakest team, the Chicago White Sox (CWS 12, NYY 2). Jazz Chisholm Jr., acquired after the trade deadline, left the game in the seventh inning due to a left elbow injury, the team announced. He will undergo tests on Tuesday.
Chisholm was injured after sliding into home plate in the fifth inning. He dived beneath White Sox catcher Korey Lee and touched home plate before the tag was applied.
Following the slide, television cameras saw Chisholm flexing his arm in the dugout. He did stay in the game for two more innings to play defense, but he was not put to the test at third base. Chisholm was replaced with a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.
Chisholm, who was traded from the Miami Marlins at the deadline, has been on fire since joining the Yankees, hitting seven home runs in his first 13 games. Chisholm was 2 for 3 on Monday night before the injury and continues to hit.257/.328/.445 with 20 home homers and 26 stolen bases during the season.
The Yankees have started playing Chisholm at third base, which is a whole new position for him. He spent the previous two seasons playing center field after starting his major league career at shortstop and second base. If Chisholm misses time, New York will most likely return to their Oswaldo Cabrera/DJ LeMahieu platoon at third.
The Yankees’ season record now stands at 70-50, following Monday’s setback. They are a half-game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.
