The 2024 MLB trade deadline has passed. There was plenty of action, with some big-name players switching teams in recent weeks. Tanner Scott, Jazz Chisholm, and Jack Flaherty are among the top players traded this season.
The trade market lacked one area this season: the infield. There were virtually few infielders shopped or traded at the deadline. Top players such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonso, and Christian Walker escaped being traded. Isaac Paredes, an All-Star, led the infield class at the deadline.
One name that came up repeatedly was Angels infielder Luis Rengifo, who is having a breakout season this year. He was a top target for teams like the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, but the Angels ultimately elected to keep him for the season.
Luis Rengifo out for the year after undergoing wrist surgery
According to FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray, Los Angeles Angels infielder Luis Rengifo has undergone wrist surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season.
The Red Sox and Yankees appear to have dodged a major bullet by missing out on this transaction. Because the infield market was dry, any deal for Rengifo would have been more expensive than his normal value.
Both Boston and New York could benefit from additional infield depth.
For the Yankees, it would allow them to play Jazz Chisholm in the outfield more frequently while also moving positions. Rengifo was a fantastic fit, but New York was fortunate that a trade never materialized.
The Red Sox, like everyone else, really need middle infield depth. I expected them to be prepared to trade prospects for Rengifo, but they never reached an agreement with the Angels.
The last thing to consider is how the Angels’ poor management of the deadline suddenly appears even worse. They were chastised as the deadline approached for holding on to far too many of their components that they should have traded. Tyler Anderson, Taylor Ward, and Rengifo were some of the names that Los Angeles should have dealt with.
